The Melvin Family’s Holiday Meals
The Melvin Family’s Holiday Meals
Last Thanksgiving we handed out 85 meals. This year I would like to improve upon that and hit 101 meals. Our average household ranges from 4 to 6 people. I know it is short notice but anything that you can do will be extremely helpful.
Each meal cost approximately $20 which includes: a Turkey, 4 cans of vegetables, a bag of rice, Macaroni and cheese, Cranberry sauce, Pork and beans, Stuffing, & a Frozen pie. Anything that you can give will help and as all of you know, all of our donations go directly to the meals. To donate you can click on the link below and you can scroll down to learn more of our backstory. You can also mail your donations to Avant Williams, LLC PO Box 2583, Evans, Georgia 30809.
For those that want to donate their time, we will be giving the meals out on November 21, 2015 at our shop located at 2834 Washington Road, Suite O, Augusta, Georgia 30909 from 10:30-12:30. One of the reasons we began this program is to show our boys that everyone lives differently and the true importance of giving back. It is good for children to experience the joy of helping others. Therefore, if you cannot stay then just drop them off and let them experience the joy.
I know that it is short notice but please have your donations in November 18, 2015 so we can get a good count. If you cannot send your donation by then, please let me know what your promise to pledge and when you can send it in. Thank all of you and be blessed my friends. Please give me a call and/or send me an email with any questions

Good news everyone, with your help we handed out 47 meals on December 21st for Christmas. I would like to thank my family, friends and my incredible staff that help packed 47 meals that included 4 cans of vegetables, a bag of rice, 4 boxes of macaroni, a box of au gratin potatoes, a pie and a turkey or ham. They worked extremely hard to set everything up and ready to go when the people arrived. This season of giving was different from most. We did not receive a lot of donations this year but we had already committed to giving away 29 meals. When later found out that more people needed meals bringing our total up to 47 families. If we were not able to provide these meals then we would have been turning down 47 families. So we had a decision to make and that decision was to not go on our vacation. Instead, we would take that money and buy the necessary meals. This would be kind of hard during Christmas but there is no way that we could have people that depend on us going hungry. So I called Wal-Mart to put in the order. The next day while attending Mrs. Robinson’s meal donation, she was able to donate most of our can goods and all of our macaroni. On Friday, at 6:15pm I get a call from Issac Kelly of Augusta Staffing asking me if I am still at my shop. He said that he has some turkeys for me. Lo and behold this guy brings me 28 turkeys. The day before we needed the turkeys he came through. In addition to the meals we had the opportunity to hand out books at the hospital for Christmas. We are extremely thankful for all that our family, friends, and my incredible staff (whom drove around door-to-door handing out meals to those who could not make it) have
done to make this a huge success!
How we got started
The Melvin Family’s Meal Donation began a few years ago while walking through Food Lion. I went there to pick up something quick to eat and left with 6 meals and a dream to help others. While shopping I saw turkeys were on sale for $6-$8 apiece. I thought to myself that it would be good to give away some turkeys for Thanksgiving. I called my wife and said, “hey we should take the kids and give some turkeys away for Thanksgiving,” and she said ok. So I put 6 of them in my basket. It then dawned on me, Food Lion has a lot of buy one get one free items during this time of the year. As I looked around I saw that we could provide an entire meal for $22-$24 dollars (description of a meal is listed below). I left the store with a total of 6 meals. Immediately I called the lady that was renting my house at the time and asked her if she needed a meal and does she know anyone else. I told her to give out my number and have them call me. We bought a total of 10 meals for thanksgiving. My wife had to work the day we handed them out. Therefore, my 2 boys and I went door-to-door handing out the meals. I decided to do this to show my sons the importance of giving. We are put here to help others when we can and that we are no better than anyone else! These are the values that I think it is important to instill in my family. We did the same for Christmas that year. The following years we handed out 12 meals for Thanksgiving and 12 meals for Christmas. I enjoy helping others but I only intended for this to be a small family affair. After 2 years of my loving wife nagging me that we should ask for donations I decided to listen. The response was overwhelming. We received donations and we were able to help so many more people. For every meal that we give it provides food for up to 6 people or more. So for every 45 meals given, we are helping approximately 270+ people on average per holiday.
Now that we ask for donations, we are
able to help more and more people. For my wife and I we still continue to buy
our original 12 meals and usually more. We do not give a dollar amount when we
ask for donations. Anything that you want to give is welcome. This is not
something that we encourage for others but we personally do not claim any of
the donations on our taxes. We believe that our giving should be just that and
receiving nothing in return. We are not rich by any means; we just take
pleasure in knowing that we are doing good for our community. We do not
pressure anyone into donating. We understand that a lot of us donate to
different organizations so we take no offense in anyone saying no. We save by
reducing the amount of times we go out to eat, to the movies, and other
activities to ensure that we are able to buy our minimum of 12 meals for
Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our small sacrifice during the holiday seasons
brings happiness and joy in so many people lives. The best part of this is, the
understanding of our children, they truly get it.
